Understanding the Chakra System: A Path to Holistic Wellbeing. An introduction to your Chakra's. All you need to know, in one place.

The chakra system is an ancient concept rooted in Hindu and Buddhist traditions, describing the seven major energy centres in the body.


Each chakra is believed to influence different aspects of our physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing.


When these energy centres are balanced and open, they contribute to overall health and harmony. Conversely, blockages or imbalances in the chakras can lead to various physical and emotional issues.


Let's explore each chakra, its associated colour, location in the body, potential blockages, actions to clear them, positive

affirmations, sounds, elements, and associated crystals.



1. Root or Base Chakra

(Muladhara)

  • Location: Base of the spine

  • Issues When Blocked: Feelings of insecurity, fear, and anxiety. Physical symptoms can include lower back pain, fatigue, and issues with the legs and feet.

  • Action to Clear Blockage: Grounding exercises such as walking barefoot on natural ground or practising yoga poses like Mountain Pose or Warrior Pose.

  • Positive Affirmation: "I am safe, secure, and grounded."

  • Sound: Lam

  • Element: Earth

  • Crystal: Red Jasper, Black Tourmaline, Tigers Eye

  • Benefits When Open: A strong sense of security, safety, stability, and groundedness. Enhanced physical health and vitality.



2. Sacral Chakra

(Svadhisthana)

  • Location: Lower abdomen, about two inches below the navel

  • Issues When Blocked: Emotional instability, creative blocks, and sexual dysfunction. Physical symptoms can include lower abdominal pain, urinary issues, and reproductive problems.

  • Action to Clear Blockage: Engage in creative activities like painting or dancing, and practise hip-opening yoga poses like Bound Angle Pose or Pigeon Pose.

  • Positive Affirmation: "I embrace my creativity and sensuality."

  • Sound: Vam

  • Element: Water

  • Crystal: Carnelian, Tigers Eye

  • Benefits When Open: Emotional balance, creativity, and healthy sexual expression. A sense of joy and pleasure in life.



3. Solar Plexus Chakra

(Manipura)

  • Location: Upper abdomen, in the stomach area.

  • Issues When Blocked: Low self-esteem, lack of confidence, and feelings of powerlessness. Physical symptoms can include digestive issues, liver problems, and fatigue.

  • Action to Clear Blockage: Practise core-strengthening exercises and yoga poses like Boat Pose or Plank Pose and engage in activities that boost self-esteem.

  • Positive Affirmation: "I am confident and empowered."

  • Sound: Ram

  • Element: Fire

  • Crystal: Citrine, Tigers Eye

  • Benefits When Open: Confidence, self-esteem, and a sense of personal power. Improved digestion and overall vitality.



4. Heart Chakra

(Anahata)

  • Issues When Blocked: Difficulty in forming and maintaining relationships, lack of empathy, and emotional numbness. Physical symptoms can include heart problems, respiratory issues, and upper back pain.

  • Action to Clear Blockage: Practice heart-opening yoga poses like Camel Pose or Bridge Pose and engage in loving / kindness meditation.

  • Positive Affirmation: "I am open to giving and receiving love."

  • Sound: Yam

  • Element: Air

  • Crystal: Aventurine, Rose Quartz

  • Benefits When Open: Ability to love and be loved, compassion, and empathy. Emotional balance and a strong sense of inner peace.



5. Throat Chakra

(Vishuddha)

  • Issues When Blocked: Difficulty in expressing oneself, fear of speaking, and social anxiety. Physical symptoms can include throat pain, thyroid issues, and neck stiffness.

  • Action to Clear Blockage: Practise throat-opening exercises and yoga poses like Shoulder Stand or Fish Pose and engage in chanting or singing.

  • Positive Affirmation: "I express myself clearly and confidently."

  • Sound: Ham

  • Element: Ether (Space)

  • Crystal: Sodalite, Blue Lace Agate

  • Benefits When Open: Clear and effective communication, self-expression, and confidence in speaking. Healthy throat and thyroid function.



6. Third Eye Chakra

(Ajna)

  • Location: Forehead, between the eyes (also known as the brow chakra)

  • Issues When Blocked: Lack of intuition, difficulty in seeing the bigger picture, and confusion. Physical symptoms can include headaches, vision problems, and sinus issues.

  • Action to Clear Blockage: Practise meditation and visualisation exercises, and engage in yoga poses like Child's Pose or Eagle Pose.

  • Positive Affirmation: "I trust my intuition and inner wisdom."

  • Sound: Om

  • Element: Light

  • Crystal: Amethyst

  • Benefits When Open: Intuition, insight, and clarity of thought. Enhanced imagination and spiritual awareness.



7. Crown Chakra

(Sahasrara)

  • Location: Top of the head

  • Issues When Blocked: Feelings of disconnection from the divine or spiritual aspects of life, lack of purpose, and loneliness. Physical symptoms can include neurological issues and chronic fatigue.

  • Action to Clear Blockage: Practise mindfulness and meditation and engage in yoga poses like Headstand or Corpse Pose.

  • Positive Affirmation: "I am connected to the divine and my higher self."

  • Sound: Silence or Om

  • Element: Thought

  • Crystal: Clear Quartz, Snow Quartz, Rock Crystal

  • Benefits When Open: A deep sense of spiritual connection, enlightenment, and purpose. Greater awareness and understanding of oneself and the universe.



The lower chakras are related to Earthly matters such as survival, sex, and power.

The top three chakras are related to higher consciousness, truth, intuition, and purpose.

In the middle, the heart chakra bridges the two worlds with empathy, love, kindness and compassion.



Maintaining Chakra Balance

There is lots you can do to maintain a balanced chakra system. Some suggestions are meditation, yoga, Reiki, sound healing, visualisation, journalling, crystal healing, acupuncture and other forms of energy healing.


Each chakra plays a vital role in our lives and understanding them can lead to a more balanced and fulfilling existence. Incorporate these actions and affirmations into your daily routine to achieve a harmonious and healthy chakra system.


Personally, my favourite way to connect with my chakra's is through colour, I choose clothes or crystals to wear and surround myself with that will support how I want to feel that day or where I want to encourage myself.
